Frequently Asked Questions
What should we provide as the host family?
Host families provide room and board for the designated period of time. This includes food and a place to stay. It is the host family's responsibility to ensure that the Rome Abroad Traveler feels safe, secure, and welcome. The host family should also share their knowledge so the Traveler can enjoy local customs and experiences in the community.
How much do Rome Abroad services cost?
At Rome Abroad, we offer a reliable, affordable way to have a cultural exchange without worrying about compatibility, health issues, or competency with children. We have a rigorous interview process so that our Rome Abroad Travelers are the best of the best. We also give each of these Travelers training and resources so they can give your family an excellent experience.
Because it is our goal to make our services affordable for everyone, the cost of these services is just €33/month for stays of 3 months or less. For more details, check out our family pricing. Families who refer another host family get a 50% discount. If you have any questions, feel free to email us and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.
What can we expect from our au pair?
Host families can expect Rome Abroad au pairs to interact as much as possible with their children. This can be in the form of telling stories, playing games, doing crafts, reading books, playing outside, learning vocabulary, or watching movies in English (rarely).
You can expect your American girl to be kind and happy to share things about herself, her family, and her lifestyle at home.
How much does a host family pay their Rome Abroad Traveler?
The amount of money the host family gives their Rome Abroad Traveler varies from country to country. In Italy, the standard amount is €70 per week (for 30 hours of time with the children). In Australia, the host family pays $200 AUD per week. In China, the payment for the Traveler varies from $180-$225 per week.
Do we need to pay for the flight?
If you feel inclined to pay or contribute to travel expenses, we invite you to do so. However, when working with Rome Abroad, you are not required to pay for the flight.
For au pairs who need to find their own route to the host family, Rome Abroad will help the au pair book the most cost-effective flight to his or her host family.
At what age should my children start learning English?
The sooner you start learning a new language, the easier it is. We recommend our services for children aged 4 to 18 years.
However, if you want to help your child earlier, we are happy to help. If your child is older but needs some English application or conversation, this is a perfect way to do it.
How can we prepare our family to host an au pair?
You can prepare now by pondering some simple questions:
Why is it important for my children to learn about another culture?
What do I want from my experience in hosting an au pair?
How can we make our au pair feel welcome at home?
Do we have the space in our home and our life to host another person?
Once you have the answers to these questions, fill out an application and get ready! We will contact you within a few business days of your application.
