Trip Itinerary

Each au pair experience is personal and tailored. While every host family and au pair (that’s you!) has unique needs and goals, here’s a general overview of what your journey may look like:

Before You Depart

Explore detailed family profiles, have video interviews, and ask the questions that matter most to you. Finalize your match and agree on duties, schedule, and stipend—all before you pack your bags.

Upon Arrival

Meet your host family at the airport and settle into your new French home. You’ll have your own room and a few days to adjust, meet the family and their children, and begin getting comfortable in your neighborhood. Spend your first days bonding with the family or taking in local sights—it’s all about easing into your new routine.

Day-to-Day Life

With your agreed-upon schedule in place, you’ll know exactly what to expect. Most au pairs contribute 25–35 hours per week with responsibilities like:
  • Looking after children at home
  • Taking them to and from school
  • Spending time at local parks or playgrounds
  • Organizing fun, enriching activities
  • Helping out with light household chores (think dishes and tidying up—just like any family member would)
You’ll always have a minimum of two full days off per week—often weekends—to relax or go exploring.
And best of all? Rome Abroad is by your side throughout it all. From daily questions to long-term planning, we’ve got your back at every stage.
Don’t go it alone—go with Rome Abroad.

No two placements are alike. Each au pair’s experience is shaped by their host family’s lifestyle and needs. But rest assured—we guide you through a personalized screening process to ensure the best possible match.

The most enriching au pair journeys come from those who fully integrate into family life. Your host family will become your second home, and the bonds you form can be some of the most meaningful relationships of your life. These connections can even lead to future opportunities down the road.

As an au pair, you’ll be a valuable part of the family—caring for the children, participating in day-to-day routines and family life, and helping out with light household chores—just like any other family member.

Whether you’re exploring a career in education or childcare, or simply seeking an affordable way to live and travel in Europe, au pairing provides practical experience and unforgettable adventures. You’ll build your resume, save money, and truly live like a local.

Being an au pair is one of the travel world’s best-kept secrets for extended, affordable cultural immersion—and Rome Abroad makes the process simple, supported, and rewarding from beginning to end.

Rome Abroad worked hard for me

“Rome Abroad worked very hard for me and I’m so grateful.”

— Kinsey, Annecy

Loved my friends, the beach, & family

“I loved meeting other au pairs. We all hit it off and went out together.
We also had a girls night and all of us made food from our own country and had dinner together.

I also spent lots of time at the beach. The heat isn’t bad in Biarritz and it makes the beach nicer.

My host family’s son and I really got along! If he didn’t see me in the morning, he would ask where I was and was really happy to see me in the afternoons.”

— Gabrielle, Biarritz

Forever grateful for this experience

“It was so fun to sit around the quiet lake, talk, hang out and listen to music. I can’t believe I lived in France. Time has flown by. I’m forever grateful for this experience I’ve had!”

— Paige, Hossegor
