Trip Itinerary

No two au pair journeys look exactly the same. Each host family has their own way of life, and every au pair (that’s you!) arrives with different ambitions and preferences. While every experience is unique, here’s a general idea of how your time abroad may unfold:

Before You Go

Browse host family bios, connect through video calls, and ask questions to make sure the match feels right. Together, you’ll agree on your responsibilities, weekly allowance, and day-to-day expectations—all before you ever board the plane.

Upon Arrival

Your host family will pick you up from the closest airport and bring you home. You’ll settle into your private room, get to know the family, and take time to explore your new neighborhood. Whether your first days are spent bonding with the children or sipping espresso at a nearby café, this is your chance to ease into Italian life.

While You’re There

Because everything is agreed upon in advance, there are no surprises. Most au pairs contribute around 20 to 30 hours each week with tasks such as:

  • Spending time with the children at home
  • Getting them to and from school
  • Walks to the park or playtime outside
  • Coming up with fun and creative activities
  • Light chores (like cleaning up or helping with meals—just like any member of the household)
You’ll always have at least two full days off per week, typically on the weekends, to relax or explore your surroundings.
And the best part? You’re never on your own. Whether you have a quick question or need bigger-picture support, we’re here to help you navigate the journey.
Don’t go through it alone. Go with Rome Abroad.

Immersed into the Italian lifestyle

“My host family host family was wonderful! I really enjoyed my time with all of them and they were completely welcoming and accommodating.

My favorite part was just the experience of living with a family. It’s much different from just taking a vacation. You really get immersed into the style of life.

It’s a great experience and opportunity, especially for young adults who want to get out, experience a new cultures, and personal growth for an extended amount of time.”

— Moriah, Rome

Experienced the culture firsthand

“My host family was amazing! They welcomed me into their family from day one and treated me like their own daughter. They are the sweetest family and really care about making sure you are happy and comfortable. My host sister is the cutest little girl and she just became my best friend right away! I love this family so much!

My favorite part about this experience was being able to travel and see different parts of Italy and visit Austria and Germany as well for a weekend. I also loved being immersed in the culture and experiencing it first hand!”

— Sydney, Martina Franca

The opportunity to learn so much about yourself

“My favorite part was being able to live abroad so cheaply and make new friends across the world.

I would recommend Rome Abroad because it gives you the opportunity to learn so much about yourself while in a cool place, and also the director is so nice and supportive.”
