🍝 Our Top 9 Places to See in Italy

Wondering where to go during your limited time in one of the most amazing countries in the world? Here is our top 9 list of places we think are worth seeing! (This list is in order of what we consider must-sees, then should-sees, then nice-to-sees.) A few of these you can even see in the same weekend — for example, you can stop in Pisa to see the Leaning Tower on your way to Cinque Terre. And you can see the beautiful coastal city of Sorrento on your weekend to Pompeii.

1. Rome

From its significant role in history, to its beautiful arts, Rome is an absolute must-see. The Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica, Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps…you name it, it’s in Rome!

2. Venice

We’ve all heard how amazing Venice is…but it REALLY is. Even with high expectations, this beautiful place tends to exceed them. Be sure to lose yourself at least once in all the amazingly intricate streets. And splurge on a gondola ride!

3. Florence

Florence is by far one of the gems of Tuscany. You’ve got some pretty amazing cathedrals here, some of the most famous art museums in the world, Il Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge) and a bunch of other really cool stuff! Definitely see this amazing city. And whatever you do, DON’T MISS seeing Michelangelo’s David in the Galleria Dell’Accademia. It’s worth every. single. penny.

4. Cinque Terre

Aka the Five Lands, or five small villages on the coast of Italy. Breathtaking and absolutely stunning. Don’t miss this — we recommend stopping for lunch in Vernazza!

5. Pisa

This quaint town is definitely worth an hour of your time — and that’s all you really need. You can see the famous Leaning Tower (and climb to the top for a handful of euros), walk along the beautiful streets, and get delicious gelato. Pisa is a cute smaller city with a great feel of what Tuscany is like.

6. Amalfi Coast

This is a world-famous place for a reason. The colors here are unbelievable and you’ll get to enjoy the sun and beach too.

7. Pompeii

This is a great place to see what life was like in Italy hundreds of years ago. Preserved by the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, this ancient city isn’t “beautiful,” but it is interesting to look around! We recommend listening to Rick Steve’s tour of the place as you wander.

8. Sorrento

Another great place down in the south of Italy. Words are superfluous when trying to describe the serenity and beauty of this place. Just check it out!

9. Siena

Really cool city in Tuscany. The historic city center has actually (like Cinque Terre) been determined by UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site. There are some beautiful buildings, museums, great food, and if you’re lucky, you can time it so you’re there during Palio, the famous horse race.

You can visit all of these places when you live in Italy for a few months as an au pair through Rome Abroad!
