Program Reviews

The experience is gold. But don’t just take our word for it.
See what both Travelers and Hosts have to say about the program!

Rome Abroad gave me a nice, tight-knit community

“My host family made me feel right at home since the moment I got there. They are very understanding people who did everything they could to make sure I had the best experience in a foreign country.

My favorite part was the network that Rome Abroad provided me with. First the family and their agency, other girls in the Rome Abroad program, and from these connections I was able to make many more.

It’s a really nice, tight-knit community. I got to meet another Rome Abroad Traveler while in Spain and we’ve developed a great friendship. The whole time I felt safe, listened to, and relaxed working with Rome Abroad’s director. Rome Abroad is on top of everything and definitely wants you to get as much as you can out of this experience.”

— Antonia, Traveler

Touched my heart

“My host family was an extremely warm family. Seeing them cook dinner and eat together every night really touched my heart and will be something that I will be including in my lifestyle. That feeling of sharing a meal together, as small as that may seem, is probably the thing that I will remember the most. My host family made me feel right at home and they made sure I had anything I needed. The kids felt like my little brother and sister.

My favorite part was learning the different Italian customs and hearing them speak the language and pick up on some language as well.

I would recommend Rome Abroad to others. It’s nice to have a person of contact to help navigate through things and also check in with you weekly rather than finding a family on your own.”

— Lindsey, Traveler

A cheap way to travel

“My favorite part of the program was definitely being able to meet new people and travel! With Rome Abroad, it’s so easy to meet other au pairs and become friends quickly!

It’s absolutely a great experience! Something everyone should do! It’s a cheap way to travel the country.”

— Celeste, Traveler

The side you don't get as a tourist

“My favorite part of the Rome Abroad program was being able to experience Europe as someone who is living there.

While living with my host family I was lucky enough to submerge myself into the Italian culture. I was able to attend Italian family parties and dinner, live like the locals, and much more.

I got to see a side of Italy that you don’t get to see as a tourist.”

— Brandy, Traveler

A good fit to immerse yourself in the culture

“My favorite part of the program was learning Italian.

I had a good experience with my host family and I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences in Italy.

I learned Italian and made many Italian friends. It’s a good fit for people who are able to leave their comfort zone, take on responsibility, and immerse themselves in Italian culture.

People who want to just travel and take nice pictures would be better off visiting Italy in some other way.”

— Joshua, Traveler

Challenge with immense growth — a beautiful journey all around

“My favorite of Rome Abroad was how they provided a platform to travel and explore new cultures.

My host family was very warm and welcoming. They made my stay with them very comfortable. If ever there were a misunderstanding, we communicated through it immediately. The kids were amazing, there was never a dull moment!

Leaving was the hardest part. You really form a bond and get into the groove of things within 3 months. It’s hard to say goodbye once you’re fully comfortable.

Rome Abroad set me up with the most wonderful family. I now feel like I have a second home.

Immersing yourself in a culture and new environment really challenges you and inflicts immense growth. It’s a beautiful journey all around.”

The chance to live abroad for an extended time is wonderful

“My host family is a very kind and hospitable family. Their apartment location is perfect for getting around Rome.

My favorite part of the program was being able to be in Italy for an extended period without going broke. Though, if I were in a more rural area, I don’t think I would have enjoyed the program as much. Being in Rome provided me plenty to do and also allowed for easy access to long distance trains.

The chance to live abroad for an extended period of time is wonderful so I would recommend that to anyone.”

— Lauren, Traveler

Italy is nothing short of amazing

“My host family was so welcoming and helpful! I enjoyed getting to know my host family’s son and the rest of his family!

I grew immensely from the different lifestyle

“My favorite part of the program was literally the experience itself. I grew immensely from the different lifestyle I was thrown into, and getting to be a part of another culture is incredible to say the least.

I truly felt like part of the city

“I liked how I was living in one spot with the opportunity to travel around. I really got to understand how people live in Italy and I truly felt like a part of the city.

My host family was so chill and nice! Once the kids got to know me it was a lot better. Also, their nanny/housekeeper is amazing and did most of the disciplining. It is a small flat though.

It was so great that I didn’t have to do any of the work to find a city or a family to live with.”

— Natalie, Traveler

The best experience; I've learned and grown so much

“The architecture and the liveliness in everything here is amazing. I’ve seen the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, a gelato festival, and so much more! I love just walking around town at night and seeing all of the street performers and people just enjoying life.

This has been the best experience and an opportunity I am so grateful I took. I’ve learned and grown so much while I’ve been here. It’s something I will never forget.”

— Brooke, Traveler

I was able to see so many things

“I’ve visited the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the Non-Catholic cemetery! I also got to see fireworks at the Piazza del Popolo for the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul, and stumbled across an aria concert at a church and a Leonardo da Vinci museum!”

I will forever treasure the memories with my host family

“My host mom and her family have become like a family to me. From day one they took me in and were so hospitable and kind. They went above and beyond to teach me about Italian culture and were eager to learn about my culture. I will forever treasure the memories of learning how to cook different meals, going to Gabicce, and simple things like eating dinner together and talking.

The children are absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed playing sports and running with my host brother, listening to music and making crafts with my host sister and playing dolls and singing songs with my other host sister. I was able to meet their grandmas and family friends who were so kind and amicable. This experience was made incredible and meaningful because of all they did for me and how at home they made me feel!

My favorite part of the program was meeting and getting to know my host family!

I’d recommend this program because Rome Abroad was able to speedily find an excellent host family and answer all my questions. Next year, my sister and cousin are planning on doing the program! Also—I’m recommending it to my students because I think this is a great, affordable option for students that want to have an experience abroad but perhaps don’t have the resources to do a semester-long study abroad program.”

— Jerly, Traveler

I have loved loved loved my time here and wouldn’t change anything.”

Good but challenging for me personally

Having support can give Travelers and parents peace of mind

My favorite part of the Rome Abroad program was being immersed in a different culture, getting to be surrounded by the locals, and building relationships with them.

My host family was amazing to me! They are very kind, generous, and down-to-earth people. They gave me everything I needed, plus more! I enjoyed getting to know the girls and speaking with them. The girls spoke really well, and were receptive to me helping them.

I would recommend the Rome Abroad program because it’s great to have support and a middle man for these types of exchanges. Rome Abroad’s Managing Director is so kind, approachable and supportive. I went to her during a hard time and I was able to feel better after speaking to her. I didn’t have to worry about anything while I was in Italy, because I knew going into it that I had support. I think this can give Travelers and parents peace of mind when starting this journey.”

— Melissa, Traveler

A great experience for me, but it's not for everyone

My host family was a very nice family which goes above and beyond for you! My family did not speak a lot of English at home so it could get discouraging.

My favorite part of the program was experiencing the culture firsthand. It was a great experience for me, but it’s not for everyone.”

— Abbey, Traveler

I also loved learning Italian through the family, conversations while being out and about…and through my language school I attended. I loved making friends and going on vacation to Madonna Di Campilgo (The Dolomites).

The kids in my host family are so great. They are fun and well-behaved and give you as much love as you give to them. The parents are very nice and welcoming. A lot of communication is needed for this family and a little thicker skin, but nothing that can take away from the experience of living in Italy.

I have always wanted to travel and this helped me do it in a way that I could save so much money, see so many places, really experience the culture and meet people apart of that culture. Who wouldn’t want to do that?! Rome Abroad made this easy and comfortable. I hope everyone has an opportunity to experience the things I did.”

Really helped me gain a sense of independence and confidence. It definitely changed my perspective on life, I learned a lot about the world and myself. To be completely honest, it was challenging but so rewarding.”

Made me grow & learn in ways I didn't expect

“I got to experience this culture and understand it in a way I don’t think I would have been able to. And I was pushed really far outside of my comfort zone, which made me grow and learn in ways I wasn’t expecting.

This has honestly been one of the greatest experiences of my life! I have loved loved loved my time here and wouldn’t change anything.”

— McKensey, Traveler

My host family felt like a real family

“I had an amazing and lovely family. Very understanding, open-minded, hard-working, funny, and caring.

My favorite part of the program was having such a caring family. It felt like a real family because of how much they care for me.

I would recommend Rome Abroad because I loved meeting new people, the languages, foods, and cultures, but most importantly doing it in an affordable way. Everything from my experience was great and I’m very satisfied.

My view of the world will never be the same

“This entire experience has been a roller coaster of wonderful sights and days with my host family to some sad days missing home and difficult interactions. I have learned so much from my short time here and the way I view the world will never be the same.

I’ve been taught so many things and my appreciation for the way people differ from each other but can instantly be so compassionate to another person they know nothing about is something I would have never fully understood without committing to this experience.

I will deeply miss my host family and everything they offered me, shared with me, and taught me. I can only hope that I gave them as much as they gave me. I hope I can use this experience to better myself and apply to my future.

It’s been absolutely amazing to see the old streets, the old buildings, and even the old ways of life lingering here. I’ll never forget what I’ve seen or done in this place. I don’t want to overlap the good with the bad because some of the days here were hard. I missed home more than I thought I would, but when I’m home I think I’ll end up missing Rome more than I currently think I will. It’s been completely world opening and life changing.”

It's perfect if you want to experience the culture & you love hanging out with kids

“I always felt recharged after traveling on the weekend. For one of my weekends, I traveled to Siena. I loved that city. I learned a lot about Siena’s history and I learned that there are 17 districts that have been competing with each other for over 400 years in the horse races. I also learned that the districts are super competitive with each other.”

I’ve made lifelong friends, talked to the most influential people, tried exquisite food, laughed non-stop, and have cried at the sight of the most magnificent buildings. Who wouldn’t want that?”

So easy to sign up for & wonderful meeting new friends

“This program was so easy to sign up for and matching up with a family was a smooth process! Also it was wonderful meeting other travelers through the program and getting some pocket money paid every week.

My host family was so kind and patient with all my hiccups within my trip! They were nice enough to provide me with not one but two replacement phones to use when I lost my phone and when the first replacement broke! They also were very understanding with my weekend trips and always asked if I needed a ride to and from the train station. My favorite part was meeting new friends.”

HOST REVIEWS

A real cultural exchange for our family

“My favorite part of the experience is that was a real cultural exchange for our family.

Our girl was a good girl; sensitive, intelligent, and discreet.

I would recommend Rome Abroad to my friends or family becuase they are willing to evaluate and solve any problems between the girl and the host family.”

— Franca, Host

She had a great relationship with all the children

“Our girl was always happy, polite, and willing to help, even if not asked to. She would know what to do to help at the right moment. She was able to set a great relationship with all the children. She had lots of funny and educative initiatives to keep them entertained. She could find funny ways to make them do their tasks. She could handle difficulties in a very mature way. You could tell she was used to being with children (she also used to live with her 7 year old nephew) because none of the misbehaving of my children ever fazed her.

My favorite part of the experience was not spending lots of time on websites to choose an au pair myself. My least favorite part was that the majority of candidates are American so by law they can only stay 90 days in Italy.

I would recommend Rome Abroad to another host family because they have experience in selecting girls; and the contract gives the family some guarantees.”

— Elisa, Host

The process was easy & family-oriented

My favorite part is that it was easy, family-oriented, word-of-mouth.

It was easy for us, and Rome Abroad allowed us to understand that experience was possible.”

— Aurora, Host

Hosting an au pair was useful for learning English for our family

“Our American Rome Abroad Traveler was amazing for me, she is really nice.

Having her at our home was useful for learning English for our family, and was a first step for the following years.”

— Martina, Host

My kids learned a lot with our Rome Abroad Traveler

“I really like when I see my Traveler with my kids and they talk all together. My second son likes to talk about soccer with her and my oldest son about music and to talk about funny things!

We finished our week with a magic trip in Elba Island, we really hope she liked it even if her skin burns a little bit now.

Unfortunately our time together is almost finished! I’m very sorry because our Rome Abroad Traveler has been a talkative girl and the kids learned a lot with her! Thank you!”

— Rosy, Host

“The girl we hosted is an amazing girl! The kids loved her and we have been really very happy too.Everything was excellent. We had an amazing experience and we would 10/10 recommend to a family member or friend. Everything has been absolutely perfect.”

— Laura, Host

The process is smooth

“Our Traveler listened and observed, tactfully asked and made sure she was doing the right thing. She was always checking in and confirming our schedule, flexible when parents were late or kids were tired.

She was greatly appreciated by other kids and parents she met on the playground, she made connections and could relate to people in the community.

The process is smooth. Overall I have always had positive experiences. Having the WhatsApp video call is always an extremely useful and fun step. Some au pairs are more work but the experience of having a younger member of the family with my kids I feel is always worthwhile.

— Martina, Host

A very positive experience

“It was very nice to host our Rome Abroad Traveler, she interacted very well with children. She has helped the children a lot with homework and she has always been very proactive!

The children had a lot of fun to go with her on a bike to the park. Every time she was alone with the children in the evening, she managed very well to put them in her pajamas and to send them to bed on time. She tried to understand them and make them understand…in short, a very positive experience!!”
