As you might already know, our program prices range from $0 to $650. The average cost for most programs is about $500. Some programs include any visa costs, and the flight, and others don’t. Still, we’re confident that you can’t find a better deal out there! The average study abroad costs a whopping $14,000 (plus tuition!) for just one semester, and other similar program costs around $3,000 and upwards. One of our main goals is to make cultural experiences affordable. That’s why we have such low program fees.

Still, sometimes it can be hard to save enough money for an adventure abroad. But believe it or not, with a little planning it can be easy! Here are some ways to fund your adventure abroad:

  1. Tell your friends!
You get a $70 discount for each friend you refer to the program who does it as well. When they apply, have them use your full name as the promo code.
  2. Save money.
One of the most effective ways to save money is to make and stick to a BUDGET. Keep it realistic. If you can live off 70% or less of what you bring home, then that’s a great sign! Be sure to save in areas that can really add up. We’ve found that meal planning helps a TON. Not only will you spend less on groceries, but you’ll also avoid expenses for eating out at restaurants or picking up fast food.
  3. Don’t buy things you don’t need.
‘Nuff said here. We’ve found it’s helpful to have a ‘consultant’ friend. Pick someone who loves you enough to tell you no if you’re considering a larger purchase.
  4. Use cash, not cards.
Many studies have shown a super interesting thing when people shop. Did you know the brain actually registers ‘pain’ when a person fork over cash? Big surprise, those ‘pain’ signals don’t show up when you use plastic! So use cash as much as possible and your brain’s natural reaction will help you reel in the spending.
  5. Work.
Get a job (or a second job). There’s something to be said about a consistent paycheck. Sow and reap, friends!
  6. Sell your old textbooks!
You’d be surprised how much your textbooks can go for after the semester is over. In our experience, selling back to the bookstore has never been worth it! But listing them on Amazon or eBay? Definitely yes. (Hint: Amazon usually can sell the books for higher than eBay so try selling there first. Then when you need to buy next semester’s textbooks, head over to eBay!)
  7. Ask for help.
There are tons of ways to do this! Here are some ideas:
    • Send out a fundraising letter
    • Donate your birthday or Christmas
    • Use a fundraising website
    • Use social media to let your friends and family know your dreams and let them help you!
  8. Set up a car wash.
Does everyone love getting out the hose and soap to wash their car? Not really. But does everyone love having their car look shiny? Yes.
  9. Host a garage sale.
Let friends and family donate gently used items and then invite everyone over for a garage sale! As they say, one person’s trash is another’s treasure…
  10. Sell arts/crafts of your own making.
With amazing resources like Facebook Marketplace, Etsy, and more, there’s a million reasons and a hundred ways to sell your crafts online.
  11. Host a bake sale.
Who doesn’t love yummy treats to fund a good cause? One of our friends baked bread and sold it on campus in the mornings. He made enough money in two weeks to buy a round-trip ticket from Utah to the East Coast!
  12. Babysit.
Not only is this an easy way to make money, but you’ll be helping tired moms and dads. Plus you’ll get good practice for when you’re living with host kids!
  13. Tutor.
Even if you just have a basic understanding of math, reading, or science, there are tons of kids who could use some time and kindness to improve.
  14. Teach English online.
Making around $22/hour sound rough? You don’t even need to leave your apartment. Just use VIP kids and you can start teaching adorable students and make great money.
  15. Work for Door Dash or Grub Hub.
What an easy way to make a buck when you need it! Just sign up online and download the app. Then you can pick up food from local restaurants and deliver it to someone’s door contact-free. Super easy.
  16. Drive for Uber/Lyft.
Being a taxi at your own leisure for a side hustle? Easy.
  17. Sell stuff.
Use Facebook Marketplace to sell your stuff online to local people. So easy, all you need to do is take a picture and post it! We have also posted in Yard Sale groups on Facebook too, and that really speeds up the selling.
  18. Clean stuff.
You’d be surprised how many people don’t want to clean their own stuff! Do it for them and make some money on the side. Also, is it just us or is it sometimes easier to clean someone else’s dishes and not your own? Housekeepers make anywhere from $10-$20 an hour so get out the dustpan.

That’s a wrap of our money-making and saving ways to fund an adventure abroad. What are your favorite ways to save money?
