Some exciting things that happened this were was that I got to go to the beach on Australian Day with my host family and a few nights prior to that I met up with some other au pairs in South Bank for fireworks, dinner and ice cream. It was so cool to be able to talk about our different cultures and what we’ve liked/disliked so far about being in Australia and just being able to relate to one another. Something I’ve enjoyed is going for walks in my neighborhood for the past few mornings. I’ve gone on different routes and it makes me feel more like a local than just a visitor. In the next week or so, I want to join the gym up the road and start going to the coffee shop so I can definitely start to feel like a local! 🙂
Some things I’ve learned is a few words that they use here in Australia that they don’t use in America. Also the words thongs in Australia means flip flops vs in America that’s not the same. Overall, my first 5 days have gone pretty well although I’ve been a little homesick, but the more I’m here and the more I put myself out there I know it’ll get better because it already has! Also, spending time with your host kids makes it easier too.
