Many people wonder: how does Rome Abroad work during the current COVID-19 pandemic?

That’s an excellent question! We want to be good global citizens and keep everyone as healthy and safe as we can. That’s why we’re taking precautions as each country and region opens to tourists.

Many countries are starting to open up their borders to vaccinated foreigners and tourists. For example, Spain, Italy, and France are currently open since these countries allow vaccinated tourists to enter the country.

Our regular programs in China and Australia are currently on hold. Applicants are welcome to submit applications to these programs. The matching process will likely be delayed until these countries loosen border restrictions. Actual start dates may be delayed, depending on how these countries decide to move forward.

The current CDC guideline for international travel to Italy, Spain, and France is a level 3/4. These programs are currently open. For now, the European Union has determined that it will allow vaccinated tourists to enter the borders. Applicants are welcome to submit applications to these programs.

To sum up:

Program Status
Italy, Spain, & France OPEN — Apply to start your adventure here.
Teach in China On hold. Go apply here to get on the waiting list.
Australia On hold — will resume as soon as borders are open. Apply early here.
China On hold — will resume as soon as borders are open. Apply early here.

So what does this mean for Rome Abroad Travelers?

If you are interested in going to Europe, apply here. We can get you started on meeting a host family right away.

If you are interested in the Australia, China or Teach in China programs, you can apply here (or wait until a later date). We are currently working on placements with host families for 2021 and 2022. Both host families and travelers will need to be flexible based on how the travel restrictions evolve. Many host families are eager to host a foreigner and very understanding about the need for flexibility based on travel guidelines.

What should I do?

As mentioned, if you would like to experience one of our Europe programs, apply now! We can help you get set up with a host family right away.

Even if you plan to participate in the program in 2022, this will help you. You can be first in line to be matched with a family and save time for the matching process.

Others may prefer to wait until the CDC risk assessment levels are lowered, which is also fine. Please not that when the travel guidelines are less strict, the demand for international travel may be quite high. This may result in higher fees, both in travel expenses and program fees.
